Intestinal Upset Remedies

Culturelle

Our fur children’s intestinal tracts are just as sensitive as those of our skin children and our own.  One way to keep things in harmony is with the use of a Probiotics, as mentioned in a previous memo.

Culturelle can be purchased at any drug store, and is excellent for keeping the intestines in harmony with the rest of the system.  For our Papillon-sized fur kids use ½ capsule per day on their food.  This will ensure enough “good” bacteria is in the system to keep our dogs stomach and intestinal tract on an even keel.

Slippery Elm Powder

This is an excellent natural remedy for several ailments.  It is used for runny diarrhea, constipation, and sore throats!  Don’t ask why the sore throat part since it is the opposite end of the body, but is works so keep this handy!

For loose stools, simply put 1/8 teaspoon in your fur kids food.

For diarrhea, make a “Tea” as follows:

1 cup water
1 teaspoon powder
Heat on stove, stirring with a whisk until “tea” starts to thicken.
Add 1 tablespoon honey
Do not refrigerate this “tea.” It will keep on the counter for 2 days. Then discard and make a new batch, if needed.  Give 1 tablespoon of the “tea” 4 times a day.

Pumpkin

Canned pumpkin is also and excellent upset stomach remedy.  It works for constipation, as well as for diarrhea, and most dogs love it!  Simply add a tablespoon to their food or give them a spoonful on its own.
