Benadryl Dosage

Pediatric Benadryl (diphenhydramine) syrup is 12.5 mg/5ml. READ the label on the bottle you get and make CERTAIN that’s the strength. That translates to 2.5 mg/ml. A ‘ml’ and a ‘cc’ are the same measure. There are 5 ml in a teaspoon. The recommended dosage for little dogs is 1 to 2 mg per lb. although you should CONFIRM this dosage with your veterinarian. You can get oral medicine syringes at any pharmacy or from your vet or save one from some medication your dog has had in the past.

The 1 mg/lb dosage calculates out as follows:

4 lbs would get 1-½ ml or 4 mg
5 lbs would get 2 ml or 5 mg
7 lbs would get 3 ml or 7 mg
10 lbs would get 4 ml or 10 mg

...and so on. So, at 1 mg/lb, a 7.5 lb dog’s dosage would be calculated as:
7.5 lb x 1 mg/lb = 7.5 mg = 3 ml (namely, 7.5 mg divided by 2.5 mg/ml)

You can print and tape the dosages to the Benadryl bottle or keep it in the box with the bottle, along with the syringe. In an emergency you do NOT want to have to try and figure out these tiny doses. Check with your vet because if your dog’s had an allergic reaction before, he/she may want you to use the higher dose. Obviously, if you use the larger dosage of 2 mg/lb, the dosages above would be doubled. Also, Benadryl will affect different dogs differently – some more then others. If in doubt as to what your dog’s problem is, ask your vet if you can give Benadryl. In most cases, unless it is a head injury or the dog should not be sedated, the Benadryl will take the edge off the anxiety of the dog and you.

Just as an FYI, if you carry Nutrical with you (which is recommended to have on hand at all times), the cap holds 1.5 ml.
